Home learning expectations per year group

 

Below is a breakdown of the homework we would like each year group to complete each week and the rough timings this should take. 

Children in each year group can always engage in additional, optional learning. We provide optional learning grids each term that include ideas from the wider curriculum that children may wish to complete. Parents may also wish to add their own activities - there are some suggested websites at the bottom of this page that can support with this.

 

Year Group

Home Learning / Homework Expectation

Nursery

  • Children are encouraged to complete the Class Dojo Challenge each half term
  • We encourage parents to read to their child every day

Reception

  • Children are encouraged to complete the Class Dojo Challenge each half term
  • We encourage parents to read to their child every day
  • Once pupils start phonics (after October ½ term) links are sent home via Class Dojo for you to practice phonics sounds learnt that week
  • Once children start to learn to read, we encourage 5-10 minutes of reading aloud 4-5 times a week

Year 1

(Approx. 1hr per week)

  • Pupils should read aloud for 5-10 minutes a day (aiming for 5 times a week)
  • Pupils should use the phonics videos to reinforce sounds (2-4 times a week)
  • Pupils should use Numbots to practice number bonds for 5-10 minutes (3-4 times a week)

Year 2

(Approx.

1½hrs per week)

  • Pupils should read aloud for 10 minutes a day (aiming for 5 times a week)
  • Pupils should use Numbots (moving to TT Rockstars) to practice number bonds and times tables for 10 minutes (3-4 times a week)
  • Pupils should practice their spelling words (4-5 times a week)

Years 3 & 4

(Approx. 2hrs per week)

  • Pupils should read aloud for 10-15 minutes a day (aiming for 5 times a week)
  • Pupils should use TT Rockstars to practise their times tables for 10 minutes (3-4 times a week)
  • Pupils should complete their maths activity (ATOM learning or assigned homework) each week
  • Pupils should complete a reading comprehension activity each week (eg: VIPERS)
  • Optional topic grid work can be completed to complement class learning

Years 5 & 6

(Approx.

2½hrs per week)

  • Pupils should read for 15-20 minutes a day (aiming for 5 times a week)
  • Pupils should practise their spelling words (4-5 times a week)
  • Pupils should complete their maths activity (ATOM learning or assigned homework) each week
  • Pupils should complete a reading comprehension activity each week (eg: VIPERS)
  • Pupils should complete a SPAG activity in preparation for SATs
  • Optional topic grid work can be completed to complement class learning

NB: Year 6 home learning changes in the 2nd half of Summer Term to support transition to Secondary School
