In Key Stage 2 we want the opportunity to direct children to more age appropriate and challenging texts once they are off our book band stages. While we enjoy the fact that children read for pleasure and can read books for their own choosing some of these books can be a little too easy and don't develop a strong vocabulary bank. We also recognise some children want to pick up books for older audiences but struggle through the language and don't understand the texts.
This year, we have launched the Ley Hill Reading Challenge for children in years 3-6. We have given children a list of books dependent on their year groups that are split in to Bronze (easier), Silver and Gold (harder).
If children read and evidence (in their reading records) the reading of these books, and manage to complete 5 books in a Bronze, Silver and Gold category they will get a coloured "Ley Hill Reader" wristband appropriate to the band they have completed.
Please find below the list of reading books in our lists so far for this challenge. We are working with book shops and authors to add even more books to these lists.
